What I don't understand about Marjorie Perloff's take on avant-gardes is how she can laud Duchamp on the one hand yet be so dismissive of surrealism on the other. Duchamp never signed on to surrealist tracts, and much of his work certainly transcends artistic trends associated with surrealism, but he was always on friendly terms with the surrealists, participated in and even helped organize their exhibitions. And most importantly, the core of his work -- the ready-mades, the punning, the use of chance, the disparity between language and objects, and supposed indifference to art -- are thoroughly entrenched in the milieu of surrealism. No, not just entrenched: they make up the core of surrealism's aesthetic.
